--=On the Alchemy bridge=--

Salvek braced himself unconsciously as February Grace entered the sequence to take the ship to transwarp.

On the viewscreen, normal space disappeared, as the transwarp conduit opened. Salvek hoped the Romulans were either too far away or too busy to notice the jump, or they would likely be even more interested in capturing them than they already were. It would not take too much effort to figure out their general direction was towards Bajor.

Taris or whomever was on the Warbird may not have the gall to approach Bajor just to get their hands on him or Zanh Liis, but if they figured out the Alchemy had a transwarp drive as well, it could prove a prize too tempting to ignore.

No matter what, it would take them some time to catch up with the Alchemy once their jump was complete. If nothing else, Liis would be safely on Bajor by the time either Romulan ship showed up.

"Status?" Salvek asked.

"The drive and conduit are stable."

Reece's statement was punctuated by a loud crash and a sudden change in course that slammed those sitting against the sides of their chairs, and those standing down to the ground.

"Did I stay stable? Because I meant horribly erratic. The conduit is collapsing." Reece added hastily.

"I should be in engineering." Kellyn regained her balance and then made her way to the lift.

"Try to hold us steady Lieutenant Grace." Salvek ordered. The ship once again lurched, and the conduit began to dissolve as the transwarp drive sputtered to a stop.

"We've returned to normal space." February stated.

"How long did we last?"

February checked their position, and the distance to Bajor. "The jump was incomplete. We are still... 26 hours away."

[Sickbay to bridge, this is the EMH.]

"Yes doctor?" Salvek asked.

[Son, I don't know if your running a starship or a demolition derby up there but maybe nobody told you I got a very sick young lady down here that doesn't need to be tossed around like a hacky sack at a stoner convention.]

"We have dropped out of transwarp. Please do not contact the bridge again unless you have information relevant to the Captain's health."

[Typical.] Was all Salvek heard before he cut the channel.

"Bridge to engineering. How is the warp drive?"

[Warp drive is fine.] Salvek nodded to Grace, which was all she was waiting for, as she resumed their course to Bajor. [I can't even begin to give you an estimate on transwarp right now. We have circuits fused all over the place. I think we can fix it, we'll have to see.]

"Understood. We can deal with that later, just keep the warp drive on line and divert any spare power you need to see if we can get a little more velocity."

[I'll shut down life support on some of the uninhabited decks. That should help a bit. Engineering out.]

"Bridge to Sickbay."

[Oh, so now you need my help and so I'm good enough to talk to? This is a classic, one-sided relationship, Commander.]

Salvek ignored the comment, partly because it was irrelevant, mostly because it was accurate. "We did not make a full jump, we are still 26 hours away from Bajor. Will there be sufficient time to save the Captain's life?"

[Well we're going to be cutting it closer then a razor blade on a gnats chin, but I think that there may just be enough.]

"Thank you Doctor. Mr. Reece?"

"Yo."

"Any signs the Romulans may have pursued us before we jumped?"

"Last I could see they were still at each other's throats. But I'll bet whoever wins that battle gets the lovely grand prize of running us down like dogs."

"You have the bridge. I'll be in engineering working with Kellyn to keep the warp drive operative. Everyone here is ordered to arrange at least eight hours of rest and a square meal for yourselves between now and when we reach Bajor."
