The wind whipped around her, rustling her suit and blowing her disheveled ponytail in all directions. It dried out her eyes and mouth and chapped her lips, so she licked her lips, to no avail. The wind kept on coming.

Lara looked out of the open door of the shuttle and smiled as she looked below and saw a whole lot of nothing between her and the ground.

“Ten seconds,” the pilot called from the front of the shuttle.

Lara stepped as close to the edge as possible.

“Five seconds.”

“Come on, come on,” she impatiently muttered to herself.

“Have a nice jump,” the pilot commented as he switched off the safety line.

Without a second thought or glance back, Lara jumped.

And then she fell.

And fell.

And fell some more.

She felt the wind rush around her, and periodically it pushed her up for a jolt before allowing her to continue her free fall.

When she was used to the current around her, she even twisted around and did a loop and a somersault in the air, enjoying the freedom of nothingness.

But alas, her freedom came to an end all too soon.

After nearly a 30,000 foot freefall, her safety systems kicked in and a parachute popped out about her. Lara immediately felt herself slowing down, and as she slowly floated the rest of the way down, she sighed.

Reaching the ground, she tucked her legs and almost gracefully landed. The parachute came tumbling down behind her. In the real world, she would have been expected to rein it in, but this was a holosuite, and the system knew better than to send her flying again because a stray wind picked up the chute.

After taking a moment to collect her breath, Lara said, “Computer, end program.”

Everything but the very flight suit she was wearing disappeared. She looked around at the black and yellow tiled room. Well, nothing like a real HALO jump – and she had done many of those over the years – but it was not too bad if one had to be stuck on a ship.

And besides, what better way to start off the day before heading on duty?
